The Chinese herbs in Genbuyu include angelica acutiloba, cnidium monnieri, mandarin orange peel, and ginseng. Kyoto, the ancient capital of Japan, is a place where the bottom of the earth is harshly cold. This luxurious bath salt is made from herbal medicines formulated to help warm the body in the Kyoto winter.

Genbu, the name of the product, is one of the six guardian deities of the Waxing, or five elements, which came to Japan from ancient China. The beliefs surrounding these elements of earth, fire, wood, water and metal were incorporated into the Yin-Yang and Feng-Shui philosophies. Genbu is the patron god of the north, symbolizing longevity, immortality, reproduction and fecundity.
